I have never been a flowery kinda girl. If I see fresh flowers at the store I stop, take a good sniff and keep on walking. They’re expensive, I kill them in a matter of hours and I’d rather spend the money on a plant instead [or a Starbucks coffee!].
During a hike around our neighborhood last week, the kiddos and I spotted a group of dead trees along our path. Not being one to just leave a few good branches behind, I grabbed a huge handful and dragged them back to the garage. [I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm nuts.] I do love the look of throwing a few ornate branches in a vase, but I was in a spunky mood this weekend and paid my local Michael’s a quick visit for a few bags of pom poms. The cost was less than $7 to create a fun arrangement for my daughter’s room…
I’m so in love with the way this looks that I want to make at least 27 more! They are so easy and cost pennies.
I purchased 3 bags of pom poms [pastel, jewel tones and white]. I wound up using one bag of small white pom poms and the small pink pom poms from the bag of pastels. I fired up the glue gun and while that was heating up, I crammed a few pieces of styrofoam into the bottom of my vase. [My vase, btw, is actually a wine chiller I scored at Crate & Barrel outlet in Carlsbad for...drum roll please...$1.97!!!!] It’s a good idea to arrange your sticks first so you don’t have to man-handle them later.
Now simply glue pom poms randomly on the sticks. You cannot screw this up.
The hardest part of a project like this is restraint. Trust me, I had the yellow pom poms in my hands and had to force myself to stop at these two colors. I like the less-is-more look, but that’s just my preference.
Lastly I wrapped a band of gray fleece around the “vase”, tied a piece of fleece rope then added 2 decorative pins. The fleece and pins I picked up during an amazing shopping trip while recently in Germany. And here is what this sweet thing looks like in my girl’s room…
If you’re looking for a fun, quick, easy, inexpensive way to add some color and personality to a room, give this a try. And the best part…how can you NOT smile when you look at a bunch of sticks covered in pom poms? This project also serves as an instant mood-booster.
