our funny christmas card

I don’t know about you, but I am so late getting our Christmas cards out this year.  I haven’t even received them yet and I’m crossing my fingers that the arrival date [today] on my order is real and not just a tease.

Anyway, I have done the perfectly posed pictures before; you know…the ones where everyone’s hair is perfectly brushed, sitting nice and straight, everything staged just right.  Well, those pictures definitely look nice, but I wanted this year’s Christmas card picture to be “us” and a bit more relaxed.  I told myself ahead of time not to get stressed and to just let the process evolve naturally (I know, it’s easier said than done).

So I came up with the idea of capturing a Christmas song lyric in picture form and I chose “Let Your Heart be Light.”  To make the picture a bit silly I told the family that I wanted us to wrap ourselves up in strings of Christmas lights.  Of course the kids were all over that one, but the husband was a bit reluctant.  [He's my serious one].

And here is how our Christmas family portrait turned out this year [please notice our little goofball and his warm "smile" for everyone to enjoy].  Like I said, I wanted to capture our true essence this year….

may your heart be light

Yup, that’s my little boy to a tee!  My big boy was a good sport, but that smile is hiding clenched teeth [he does NOT like taking pictures].  I guess my son doesn’t either [the apple does not fall far from that tree].

And here is how it looks on our card…

I just love it and it took all of 15 minutes to get everyone wrapped up, sitting on the couch and smiling their best [or sticking their tongue out].

In case you’re wondering I only found one online card shop that offered this cute quote and that’s minted.  They have the best selection in my opinion and the prices are very reasonable.  I ordered mine last week and the shipping was free.  I don’t know if they still offer free shipping, but you can still receive 15% off on your card order.  [Nope, I'm not endorsed in any way for this little plug;  just sharin the love].

a simple [sexy] mantel

Geez, when I started this week I had no intention of writing so many Christmas-related posts.  Sorry if you’re getting sick of them!  I think I am almost to that point too and tomorrow will probably be the last one.

So I decided to get out of my comfort zone this year and try my hand at decorating our mantel.  I have never done this before; usually I just duck tape our stockings up by the fireplace and call it good [I am sort of kidding].  Since I’m now “blogging” I figured it was time to push myself and see what I got.

And what I “got” was this sexy mantel

With the exception of the bright red wood floral wreath [Target $35], everything else was grabbed from various places around the house.

When I decide to get out of my comfort zone, I really mean it!  How many people think of zebra rugs as a Christmas decoration?

I grabbed this from the hallway leading to the garage.

I stole these two faux boxwood orbs from the living room, as I was not feeling them in there.  I think they’re just perfect on our Christmas mantel though.  I attached these to the mantel with…get ready for it…duck tape!!  If you look hard enough you can see it.  The tiny pom pom fringe and all the ribbon you see have been shoved in our Christmas wrapping paper box for the past 4 years!   It all came from Costco and it just never seems to end!

Last but not least is my craigslist mirror [a heavy beveled beast of $25 loveliness] that I sprayed gloss black.

Now that I’ve babbled enough, I will “zip it” and let you simply….enjoy.

So there is my first official Christmas mantel!  I think I have one more Christmas post in me until I’ve hit overload.

decorating a Christmas tree with craft supplies

No, it’s not what you’re thinking!  I didn’t go absolutely bonkers and throw some glue sticks, yarn spools or rolls of washi tape onto our tree.  I did however deplete my stash of jute rope and scrap pieces of black pom pom fringe!

After making a huge batch of salt dough ornaments with the kiddos this past weekend, I was motivated to keep their Christmas tree simple and spend $zero decorating it.  Well, that didn’t happen…I wound up spending $3!  :-)   The only thing I purchased for their tree was the Frosty Snowman top hat I found for $3 at Target.

I love how this looks and enjoy something a bit different than the expected star or angel. [ Although sometimes I swear it looks like “Cousin It.”]

After the kids and I hung all the ornaments we made I asked them, “Do you want to help Mama finish decorating your tree?”  My daughter excitedly said, “Yeah, Mama!  Let’s get out the Christmas stuff in the garage!!”  My son said, “I be outside in the sand box Mama.”  Yep that’s about right.

So my daughter [aka, future DIY'er and maker of all things glittery] and I dashed to the garage and grabbed box after box of Christmas decorations.  Nothing quite felt right for their tree so I told her, “Let’s use stuff Mama has laying around to decorate your tree.”  I got the deer-caught-in-the-headlights stare for a few seconds then she shrugged her shoulders and said, “OK.”  I got my scrap craft box out and we rummaged through it to see what we could find.  I grabbed some jute rope and b+w chevron tape, while she grabbed remnants of black pom pom fringe I used on her drapes.

Here is what us girls came up with…

I never thought I’d use black anything on a Christmas tree, but I must admit that I am liking it!  The same can be said for the jute rope.  The tree was a bit gothic looking at this point so I added the small red glass ball ornaments to add some vibrant color.

Instead of a typical tree skirt, I just grabbed our IKEA blanket [which EVERY blogger seems to have] and threw it under the tree.

I have been hanging onto this b+w chevron tape [why is this stuff called tape?  it's fabric!!] for just the right project.  Instead of letting this stuff sit and sit in my garage I cut it into strips and made bows for the tree.

And there you have it!  A Christmas tree trimmed with on-hand craft supplies that cost all of $3!  What would you throw onto your Christmas tree?
