a fake plant gets a makeover

a fake plant gets a modern makeover and overhaul

Do you ever have a bazillion things you NEED to get done, but your brain gets distracted for a split second and you’re off giving a fake plant a makeover?  No?!   Crap, I’m weird.

In the midst of running around the house like a lunatic today prepping for a huge business dinner party my husband and I are hosting tomorrow night, I decided to hack apart this fake thing…

transforming a fake plant into a gold trophy

Why??   It was my sanity break in the middle of my crazy day.  Do you have an item in your house that just bugs the crap out of you, but for some strange reason you hold onto it?  Well this fake plant has been with us for 6 years and has bugged the crap out of me for that long.  I bought it at Costco.  Today was the day though this guy got hacked.  So I threw this poor unsuspecting-outdated mess- of-fake-plantness in our backyard, ripped him apart and got out my new favorite gold spray paint.

Just one light coat later and I was left with a golden trophy!

It’s just a notch shy of being gaudy.  I like it!

For now I decided to fill this golden beauty with a real plant, but see white tulips in the near future.

I have to say this guy has come a long way.

Organizing my project space [the garage]

I am not a frilly girly-girl.  Never have been.  I’ve gone through my years of self-doubt and wondering why I just never felt comfortable wearing skirts and heels like a lot of girls do.  Thankfully, those days are over and I’m happy wearing jeans+t-shirts+comfy shoes.  I have also found my “happy Mom-spot” in the house is not a bubble bath sipping a nice glass of red [although that does sound mighty fantastic], nor is it standing in front of the mirror doing my hair+make-up.  It’s the GARAGE!  Yes, that’s the spot where I feel the most productive and inspired.  If I’m missing from my kids’ sight for more than two minutes they say, “Oh, she’s in the garage AGAIN!”  That brings a huge smile to my face.  More on that later.

So because I spend a lot of time in the garage I figured it was time to spruce it up a bit and organize it so I can finally find stuff! Nothing frustrates me more than digging through piles and tubs of crap to find the right screw, a cup hook, some wire, you get the picture.  Because it’s the garage I did not want to spend a dime.  So what better thing to use than SOUP CANS and other stuff I had laying around in the….GARAGE!!

Since we do not have garages here in California [at least where I live] it is the catch-all space and we store just about everything in there.  We are using our old IKEA wardrobes to store our skis, winter gear, and all of my project paraphernalia.

They are pretty beat up and I decided to paint “mine” with my chalkboard paint.

Now I have a spot to write down my ever-growing list of things to do and make!  And the kids can keep me company and doodle.

Now please don’t judge me by this next picture.  We I haven’t touched the garage since we moved in.  It’s the last frontier!

Ugh!  Isn’t this inspiring?  To rip your hair out maybe.  I grabbed our stockpile of soup cans[the hub loves his soup] and decided to organize the little things that I use frequently and to put them within easy reach.  I screwed a few soup cans onto the inside door and threw a chalkboard label on each.

I attached a few cup hooks onto the opposite door and hung up my little tools I use almost daily.

I have small kiddos.  I have curious kiddos.  To keep them safe and give me peace of mind I attached a lock at the top of the wardrobe.  Now I can worry about something other than them getting into the spray paint or glue.

I know this isn’t ground-breaking stuff, but I wanted to share some quick tips that have helped me get a little organized in my Mom Space.

updating an old door mat

spray paint an old door mat for a new look

In my quest to makeover just about EVERYTHING in and around our house nothing is off limits [well spray painting my kids is probably not a good idea].   While playing soccer in the backyard with my little man the other day, I got the raging itch to do something with our ugly doormats.  So after I got my butt kicked 10-3 I accepted defeat and got busy making this door mat a bit prettier.

It’s just a simple coconut fiber door mat that has seen better days.  But….you know what I’m going to say….I try to squeeze the life out of everything first before tossing it into the garbage.

While little man was basking in the glow of victory, I taped off a simple design with painters tape.  I had to push the tape down a bit as it does not want to stick.

I stopped my taping at this point thinking that the design would be pretty.

Because the door mat is obviously outside I chose my go-to enamel spray paint in flat black.  Then I got my trigger-finger to work.

This sucker soaked up a TON of paint.  I went through that entire can of paint!

And the moment of truth.  My first impression was, “This looks a flag! Do I want to be trampling all over some country’s flag?”  I know…my thought process is strange.  Plus I wasn’t impressed with the way it looked.  Soooo….

I took a risk and grabbed my little can of white gloss latex. LATEX?!?!  I know…but the label said it’s great for outdoor projects.  So I shrugged my shoulders and said, “Let’s give it a try!”

I dabbed white paint over the design I already created then decided to keep on chugging and fill in the entire door mat.  I just used an old crappy craft paint brush.

And here she is!  As fate would have it, we got a rain storm in San Diego yesterday and the paint held up just fine!

I like it! It’s a cheap update and I love the bold look of black and white!  I’m on a B+W kick right now and don’t see it coming to an end anytime soon.
