geometric orb [made from a dog's toy]

geometric decorative orb from a dog's toy

I have been itching to DIY another decorative orb since my recent post on how to “create” a brass urchin using a kid’s toy.  This time I wanted something a bit more substantial and chunky so I made a trip [with my best little shopper] to our local Petco.  Yep, I’m officially nuts!

As soon as I turned a corner in the pet toy aisle I spotted these perfectly geometric rubber dog toys.

I purchased one of each size and once home, I got busy prepping and painting them.  I did learn something from my brass urchin paint job and that is…if you want a nice smooth, crack-free paint job on your plastic items use a plastic spray primer.

I gave each “orb” a coat of primer [it goes on clear] and let it dry for one hour.  Once dry I decided to paint each orb something other than gold as I am craving something different.  GOLD It’s everywhere!  So I brought out my gloss black and aubergine spray paints.  I did add some gold glitter afterwards [baby steps prying my fingers off the gold I guess].

I gave each a quick coat and let dry for another hour.

Once that coat was dry I decided to spritz each with gold glitter spray for the holidays.  I think once Christmas is over I will re spray each a solid color.

Here they are!  After a couple hours I transformed a dog’s toy to a decorative orb that now graces the end table in our family room!

Unless you get REALLY close to these or pick them up, you would never know they are really a dog’s play toy!  I think I will place a battery-operated tea light in the bottom of each for some extra fun.  Or I might squeeze in a miniature potted succulent.  You can do so many things with these!

Hi, I found this at the Power of Paint linky party – this is an AWESOME idea! And they’re big! I have cats and have been missing out on the dog aisles at Petco – I might do this too, this is a great idea. If they have small ones they could be tree ornaments too. Thanks for sharing this, love it.

What a clever idea. The purple one would totally match my dining room. I like the gold on top. Gives it more of an upscale look. I can’t believe these are just dog toys. Love it, thanks for sharing.
